As Executive Chairman and CEO of People Corporation, Mr. Laurie Goldberg is responsible for providing leadership and overall strategic direction to the corporation and its subsidiaries. Under his guidance and leadership, the organization began its transformation from a regional firm to one with a national presence. Today, People Corporation is the fastest growing firm in the group benefits, group retirement and HR industry in Canada. Recently, Mr. Goldberg was recognized as the EY Entrepreneur Of the YearTM 2014 Prairies Division in the Professional and Financial Services category.
Mr. Goldberg’s experience includes the position of Chief Operating Officer and Office of the President of Assante Corporation, formerly a TSX listed company. During his tenure with Assante, he led the organization from approximately 100 employees to become one of the largest non-bank owned financial institutions in Canada, with some 2,500 employees and advisors, managing approximately $22 billion in client assets. Assante's portfolio also included a leading sports and entertainment services organization in the United States. In 2003, the Canadian Operations of Assante were sold for almost $1 billion. Prior to joining Assante, Mr. Goldberg was Managing Partner with Arthur Andersen (now Deloitte). Mr. Goldberg graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba and is a Chartered Accountant.
Ms. Bonnie Chwartacki is the President of People Corporation. Along with strategic and corporate operational initiatives, she is also responsible for the Shared Services Divisions across Canada. Ms. Chwartacki joined the firm in 2008, and held the positions of Vice-President, and Executive Vice-President prior to being named President in October 2014.
Ms. Chwartacki has over 25 years of experience in the Employee Benefit and Financial Services sectors, having held progressive management and senior positions with leading Canadian corporations. Prior to joining People Corporation, she was Vice-President and Partner, Connor, Clark & Lunn, Capital Markets. She also held senior leadership positions with AIC Ltd as Vice-President and Regional Manager for both UNUM Canada (now RBC Insurance) and Great-West Life. Ms. Chwartacki holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Honours) from the University of Manitoba.
Mr. Dennis Stewner is Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer of People Corporation and is responsible for the overall finance & operating functions of the corporate office including financial reporting, audit, tax, treasury, corporate governance, investor relations, IT, legal and compliance.
Mr. Stewner has over 20 years of financial and operational experience primarily in the financial services industry. Prior to joining People Corporation, he was the Senior Vice-President for National Bank Financial where he was responsible for the bank’s Canadian full service brokerage business outside of Quebec. Prior to that, he held a number of senior leadership roles including CFO and COO for Wellington West Holdings Inc. Dennis is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba.
Mr. Brevan Canning is Executive Vice President and Group Head, Benefit Solutions for People Corporation. In this position Mr. Canning is the leader of the Company's third party administration business which includes the HealthSource Plus, Les Assurance and BHL divisions of the Company. Mr. Canning previously held the position of VP, Finance for People Corporation where he was responsible for external financial reporting, regulatory compliance, management information systems, financial planning, back office services, and risk management.
Prior to joining People Corporation, Mr. Canning held Corporate Development roles at both CanWest Global Communications and, prior to that, at Band-X Ltd., both of which provided him significant international accounting experience. He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree, a graduate from Oxford Brookes University with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Certified General Accountant.
Ms. Lisa Villani serves as the Executive Vice President, Consulting Solutions. Lisa holds overall responsibility for leadership of our consulting operations through our partner firms across Canada, focused on providing strategic and innovative benefit consulting advice and solutions to our clients.
Ms. Villani has over 20 years of progressive leadership expertise in Employee Benefits and Retirement Solutions. Prior to joining People Corporation, Ms. Villani held a number of executive management and leadership roles at Manulife Financial and Maritime Life Assurance Company. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University and is a graduate of the LIMRA Leadership Institute Fellow Designation Program from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
John Gallivan serves as Senior Advisor to the Company and in this capacity works closely with the Board of Directors and the senior management team. His extensive industry and leadership experience enables him to provide insight and advice on strategic matters. Mr. Gallivan is also President of Gallivan & Associates Student Networks, the Company’s subsidiary focused on providing health, dental and wellness solutions to students at post-secondary educational institutions across the country, with the objective of expanding market share in the post-secondary student benefits marketplace.
Mr. Paul Asmundson is Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Development Officer for People Corporation. In this role Mr. Asmundson leads the Corporate Development function and is responsible for overseeing all initiatives and activities aimed at the origination and execution of mergers, acquisitions and investments aligned with the company’s overall strategic growth plan.
Paul has nearly 20 years of investment banking and corporate development experience. Immediately prior to joining People Corporation, Mr. Asmundson was Senior Managing Director in Deloitte LLP's Corporate Finance business based in Winnipeg, where his primary focus was mergers and acquisitions, financing and board advisory mandates. In addition to his most recent role with Deloitte, Paul has over 14 years’ experience in the Canadian investment banking sector in progressively senior roles, providing advice on a range of strategic transactions and financing activities. Paul holds a Bachelor Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business.
Mr. Glenn Pittman is Vice President of Corporate Development. In this capacity he is responsible for the origination of mergers and acquisitions, investments and partnerships that are aligned with the company’s overall strategic growth plan. Mr. Pittman has held progressive leadership positions within the financial services industry over the past 25 years. Immediately prior to joining People Corporation, Mr. Pittman was Senior Vice President of Portland Investment Counsel. Prior to that Mr. Pittman held leadership positions with Manulife Securities/Berkshire Investment Group as Senior Vice President, as a Partner with Connor, Clark & Lunn Capital Markets and also as Vice President & National Sales Manager with AIC Limited. Mr. Pittman attended McGill University in Montreal and also earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Mr. Scott Anderson has been the principal of The Catalyst Company since 1998, a management and consulting business that facilitates the financing and success of Canadian emerging growth companies. Mr. Anderson has extensive board experience on over 15 public and private business boards. Prior to his involvement with Catalyst he was President and COO of Rider Travel Group, the Canadian market leader in corporate travel services. He joined Rider Travel in 1987 as the CFO having held a similar position at Vickers & Benson Advertising. Prior to that, he was an auditor at Arthur Andersen in Toronto. Mr. Anderson holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto and is a Chartered Accountant.
Mr. Leipsic has over 35 years experience in private and public company management and governance. He is currently the Managing Director for Acumen Corporate Development Inc., a firm providing corporate development and strategic advice. Mr. Leipsic focuses on mergers and acquisitions from both the seller and acquirer perspective and navigating succession planning for privately held companies. He was previously General Counsel and Senior VP for CanWest Global Communications Corp. where he provided financial and business input on significant litigation, new initiatives, joint ventures and acquisitions. Mr. Leipsic holds a Bachelor of Arts and Law degree from the University of Manitoba.
Mr. Stefanson provides almost 40 years' experience in government, industry and public practice, including extensive experience in a director capacity. His private sector experience includes being the Managing Partner of the Central Canada Region for BDO Canada LLP Chartered Accountants and Advisors. In addition, he held senior finance and operating roles with Assante Corporation, including the roles of Chief Financial Officer and Managing Director, Finance and Planning for Assante Canada, and Chief Operating Officer for Assante Asset Management Ltd. Mr. Stefanson has also spent many years in public service. He served in prominent roles in the Manitoba government including Minister of Health and Deputy Premier, Minister of Finance and Chair of Treasury Board, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism and Minister responsible for Sport. Mr. Stefanson was also a Winnipeg city councilor and served as Deputy Mayor.
Currently he is Chairperson of the Audit Committee for The North West Company, Chairperson of the Audit Committee for FWS Holdings Limited, Director for Via Rail Canada Inc. and Chair of the Investment Committee of the Winnipeg Civic Employees’ Benefits Program. Mr. Stefanson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and has received his Fellow of the Chartered Accountants (FCA).
